Guitar VST Plugins

There are many options when it comes to choosing a great VST plugin for guitar. Many options aren’t worth your while.

It is difficult to convert guitars into a plugin because you lose the sound and character of a real guitarist.

Over the years, I have downloaded many guitar VST plugins to replicate a real guitar’s tone and quality. However, they almost always sound artificial and too synchronized.

Some plugins, however, stand out above the rest due to the real-life articulation and “humanization” sounds.

Are they any FREE Guitar VST Plugins?

Yes! Many free VST plugins for guitar are available. These plugins can create great sounds for your guitar that are similar to those of commercial plugins.

Here are 8 of the best guitar VST plugins for 2021. These will give you professional-sounding guitar sounds without ever having to reach for your wallet.

We have included electric and acoustic guitar VST plugins to ensure that we are covering all bases. Let’s get to it!

Top 26 Best Free Guitar VSTs Review 2021

Top 26 Best Free Guitar VSTs Review 2021

Ample Guitar M-Lite II

This is a high-quality acoustic guitar sound.

It is perfect for busy mixes because it has a slightly tinny tone. It works well with pop and pop-adjacent songs.

However, if your acoustic is meant to be a focal point of your mix, it might not be the right fit.

Ample Guitar M Lite II is the perfect background acoustic for adding high-end shimmer to your music!

Shreddage Stratus Free

The Shreddage Stratus simulation is available for free at the shreddage stratus. It’s very realistic in sound quality, and you can create very similar guitar tracks if you can use them properly.

You won’t find it the easiest VST to use because there are so many parameters you can adjust. For example, instant multitracking allows you to double the guitars and pan them right and left for a richer sound.

The “Shred” settings in the performance tab allow you to adjust the volume of the pick’s sounds. This is great for creating a sweeping arpeggio-style lick that uses alternate picking.

This freebie will give you a Stratocaster sound.

Haunted Guitar Lite

This plugin is a free VST for guitar. It was created with a multi-sampled Fender Stratocaster Plus Deluxe Electric Guitar. The result? Some spooky, atmospheric sounds.

Haunted Guitar Light by Electronik Sound Lab includes a variety of preset tones. These range from “Ancient Void” to “Life Drain”, which are perfect for drills and hip-hop beats.

The free VST for guitar comes with many additional options, such as LFO Modulation and ADSR.

This is a great choice for those who want darker and more moody tones, with a wide range of parameters.

Boogex, a guitar amplifier effect AAX, and AudioUnit, and VST plugin, has various sound shaping features that can be used for professional sound and music production.

Boogex has a pleasant “minimalist” sound that can sometimes be quite loud at higher drive settings. However, it can easily be muted with the built-in EmphasisEQ.

  • Guitar processing in real-time
  • Simulation of a speaker cabinet
  • Processing mono convolution

DSK Dynamic Guitars

DSK has made tons of popular free instruments. Dynamic Guitars is their most loved offering.

It is three instruments in one. There are three options: steel, nylon, or acoustic.

Each has its tone, so you have plenty of freedom to experiment with them all!

The steel guitar is my favorite for riffs that are loud and clear. The acoustic or nylon presets, on the other hand, are more relaxed.

Spicy Guitars by Keolab

Spicy Guitar is an acoustic guitar synthesizer with a physical model that allows you to play chords easily. It also features a chord detection system that lets you add that real-life strumming sound to your guitar.

The automatic chord detection system detects when you play more than three notes and strum the chord.

The plugin can detect the notes you are playing on a keyboard and display them on the virtual fretboard.

You can toggle between sustain and legato, adjust your palm mutes, and play harmonics (by holding down a key on the keyboard) and vibrato.

You can also change the tone or add reverb to your sound!

Classic. Get Lite, a multi-sampled, free classical guitar plugin, has a warm, rich character and a simple interface.

This plugin is not as authentic and realistic as Ample Guitar M Lite II. This plugin is amazing for creating spacey, classical guitar sounds.

It’s easy to turn this sampled classical guitarist into a retro synth sound by playing with the parameters.

Gain control, LFO modulation, and modulation options are also available. You can also experiment with seven waveys presets. I highly recommend this free plugin for guitar.

Blue Cat

The included models of the “classic clean”, the “classic drive,” or “modern drive” guitar amps are inspired by the legendary amps of the real world. They cover a wide variety of tones, from the vintage-sounding guitar sounds to high-gain metal tones to more modern, high-gain tones.

  • Plug-in for guitar amp simulation.
  • Three amp models inspired by legendary amplifiers: “classic clean”, “classic drive,” and “modern Drive”.
  • Simulations using the destructor dynamic distortion and amp modeling engine.
  • To add color to your amp simulation, you can load your cabinet or reverb impulse response responses.
  • There is no latency

Spitfire Peel Guitar

Spitfire’s LABS series has a plethora of inspiring sounds.

Peel Guitar is free, but it is premium quality.

It is a clear-toned, clear-toned telecaster that has vibrato, tone, and distortion. This telecaster shines well over orchestral music, but it can also be used for any other genre.

You can create some great crunchy sounds by playing low polyphonic. It is mainly used as an atmospheric pad to add atmosphere to a mix’s back wall.

Guitar Rig 6 Player

Guitar Rig 6 has a new user interface. There are also some improvements over Guitar Rig 5.

Guitar Rig 6 Player, the free version, is a free version of Guitar Rig 6 Pro. It has fewer features such as amps and cabinets, pedals, and other effects. However, it is free and can be used indefinitely.

It comes with a British-style tube amplifier, a matched cabinet, and 13 effects such as Reverb, Distortion, Delay, and more. There are also 50 presets.

Guitar Rig’s drag-and-drop interface makes it easy for beginners to use.

Cute Emily Guitar

Cute Emily Guitar, another free VST for guitars, samples an Epiphone SG electric guitar.

This plugin sounds great without any extra effects. Although the dry sound is not very realistic, it sounds robotic.

Surprisingly, however, I have found great results by adding different guitar amp / FX plug-ins. This VST is great for adding little riffs or melody to your tracks. But make sure to add FX before you start!

The NRR-1 is a digital imitation of a preamplifier tube for guitar with three channels.

It was designed to model the real hardware counterpart of Fleshgod Apocalypse guitarist Cristiano Trionfera, which was built by Ignite amps in 2009.

The NRR-1 core circuit is largely based on an infamous boutique preamplifier from ’88 that Cristiano modified to best suit his needs.

  • Ignite Amps 3rd Generation Triode Modeling Engine.
  • There are three channels: Clean, Rhythm, and Lead, with completely separate controls.
  • Processing support for Mono and Stereo.
  • Selectable oversampling rate up to 8x
  • Controls at the global input/output levels
  • Double-precision floating-point mathematical model (64 bits)
  • Fully automated controls
  • Ignite Amps proprietary preset management software with bank file import/export functionality.

Shreddage 3 Stratus Free

Shreddage Stratus can be described as a Kontakt Library. It will work only if you have Kontakt installed.

The free version is just as good and deserves to be on this list.

Shreddage 3 Stratus Free lets you add tons of nuance and authenticity to your performance, making it more real.

You can change the picking mode, automate bite and vibrato, or automate biting. To make it easier for guitarists to understand your chords, turn on “poly output”.

There are 30 amp cabs to choose from. You can also switch between the condenser and dynamic mics.

Shreddage is the best free alternative for distorted electric guitars.

Amplitube 5 Custom Store

Amplitube 5 Custom Shop looks almost identical to Guitar Rig. It also has a drag-and-drop interface. There are no limitations, such as working for 5 minutes, then closing it again and opening it again.

You will be able to use all of the features for ten days after downloading the software.

After the 10-day trial ends, only a few features will be active. These include five amps with matching cabinets, six cabinets, and a Tuner. There are also about ten effect pedals. Other simple features, such as the ability to change the microphone placement.

Amplitube is a standalone software that works just like Guitar Rig. It doesn’t require a DAW to be run. And it sounds amazing!

Kontakt Start

Kontakt Start is the huge free Native Instruments bundle that includes a wide range of effects and instruments.

This bundle includes a BAND instrument collection, which lets you sample 13 pop and rock instruments, as well as e-guitars, basses, and more. The sound quality is excellent, as it is with Native Instruments.

To access the free guitar VST, you can download the entire Kontakt Start library. It’s a great free VST collection, and I recommend it.

I prefer Amplitube to Guitar Rig. It just seems a little more real.

Important Update: Amplitube was my favorite paid amp sim. (As far as the free ones go, it’s probably still the best.) However, after trying out our BIAS FX 2, especially BIAS Amp 2, I can say that my preferences have changed tremendously.

I love BIAS Amp 2! The clean tones and realistic sound are amazing.

The BIAS sims are worth $50.

Le456 is a preamp sim that was based in part on a well-known German gear.

Each channel/mode shares the same features. Each channel/mode offers two-tone stacks, which can be accessed through the focus switches.

To boost the low or high frequencies, bottom and bright switches are available.

The bright switch’s effectiveness decreases when the gain setting changes on the channel with low gain (Clean/Crunch).

  • Two channels
  • There are two modes per channel.

Pettinhouse Guitars Free

Pettinhouse offers a selection of free VSTs for guitars.

Each song is given a different flavor by the warm jazz, funk, and acoustic plugins.

Warm jazz is my favorite. It has a soft, clear, and electric tone that is missing in other libraries.

LePou Amp Package

The Poulin amp simulators work well with heavy music, and they can be used on almost any DAW.

It is necessary to attach a cabinet to the chain, as you won’t receive any when you download the amplifier.

You can also download LeCab from the same site. This is a VST that allows you to load cabinet simulator impulses.

You can load six cabinets simultaneously and mix them as you like. LeCab is 32-bit, so that it won’t work on 64-bit systems.

A few of the amps that you can get are:

  • Leto is based upon a Mesa Boogie dual rectifier.
  • Based on Engl Powerball, Le456
  • LeGion is not based upon any amp. It’s an Original LePou.

These Amp Sims sound great, but I feel they are outdated and replaced by the Emissary or Amped Roots Free.

Important Note: This guide will show you how to make your Guitar Amp Simulator sound good. They don’t always sound the way one would expect.

Ample Bass P Lite II

Ample Bass P Lite II

Ample’s Bass P Lite II plugin is a great option if you need a bass guitar plug-in.

The plugin for bass guitar has a vibrant and realistic sound. It also includes several humanization elements like fingering noises, hammering, etc.

This plugin is highly rated and extremely popular. It has a warm, rich sound that should be on everyone’s radar for 2021.

The Emissary digital emulates a custom dual-channel tube amp. It was designed to replicate the real hardware counterpart of Ryan Huthnance’s Emissary.

The GUI is a 3D rendered amp model with the same control layout. We have made every effort to minimize latency and ensure flawless real-time performance.

For an example of its immense power, see the video linked. This could be hooked up, and we could spend hours or days ripping through riffs in glee.

ReValver 4, Peavey’s guitar effects bundle, is an amazing piece of gear that anyone can afford.

You get a few amps and effects as part of the free version. Many of their most powerful features are behind a paywall. However, you can get them individually or in bundles.

This is a great option if you want to increase your rig’s size slowly.

TSEx50 v2

This plugin is also a favorite of mine. It can produce a wide range of sounds, from clean and crisp tones to cool, crunchy sounds too heavy metal tones.

The Pro version is also available, but I did not try it as the free one was sufficient for my needs.

I found the TSEx50 v2 to be the most interesting because it includes IR’s (Cabinet Simulations). These are what make or break a guitar simulator sound and not the amp itself.

All of the IR’s available sound amazing, and you can load external ones to the Software.

It’s better than Amplitube or Guitar Rig in sound quality, but it doesn’t have as many features. Plus, it makes an annoying sound every few minutes to remind you to buy the premium version. That’s why I didn’t rank it higher on my list.

  • It’s still worth it.
  • This demo version includes the following:
  • Tuner
  • Equalizer
  • Reverb
  • Do not delay
  • Phaser
  • Noise reduction
  • There are many cabinets to choose from
  • 4 Distortion pedals

Cypress TT-15

Black Rooster Audio’s guitar amplifier head emulation was meticulously modeled on a low wattage amplifier, the Black Rooster Audio Cypress TT-15. It is available at an unbeatable cost.

The Cypress TT-15 is a simple instrument with six intuitive controls. It can be used for both clean, crunchy tones and more distorted sounds.

A simple 2×12 cabinet simulation was also included. This can be passed who prefer other solutions or if the circuit is being fed into an external power amp/cabinet.

Nick Crow plugins

These are not something I would use to achieve a clean or bluesy tone. But if you love metal, it will be very useful!

Also, you need to run them through VST cabinets. Otherwise, they will sound terrible, just like amps you don’t run through cabinet (Download NadIR from Ignite Amps, and you’re good to go).

  • These plugins are not standalone versions, unfortunately!
  • These four can be downloaded from the main website.
  • Tube-Driver v1.3 (Tube amp emulator plugin).
  • Nick Crow 8505 Lead, v.1.2.
  • Nick Crow 7170 Lead V.1.2.
  • Wagner Sharp (Tube preamp emulation plug-in).

Studio Devil

Studio Devil British Valve is a free plug-in that allows you to create guitar amps and sound effects on VST, Audio Units, and Pro Tools RTAS compatible hosts. It can be used on both Mac and Windows.

  • British High-Gain Amp Emulation is based on Marshall stack.
  • Power Amp Drive Control for natural power amp compression
  • Built-In 4×12 Cabinet Emulation
  • Realistic Tone Controls: Treble, Bass, Treble, and Presence
  • Rates for Professional Sampling: 44.1kHz and 48kHz; 88.2kHz and 96kHz; 176.4kHz and 192kHz support
  • 4X Up-Sampling Engine With 64-bit Floating-Point Internal Precision
  • Compatible with Windows and Mac VST Audio Units and ProTools RTShosts

Ace Vintage Tube

Ace is a digital simulation of the 1950s, American all-tube tweed, and 5Wamp.

Two of the most popular amp mods were added to the model: Adjustment of feedback level and the addition of grid stopper resistances. If you prefer the original amp sound, both can be switched off.

It sounded okay after trying it for a while, but I found it too unrealistic and glassy. Maybe you like it!
